The latest monthly challenge of 2020 and you are part of it, isn't that great. If you haven't won yet this year, "The December 2020 Collection" offers you one last chance. Good luck and a very Happy New Year.

Location
Canyonlands National Park in Utah is a rugged incredible place. This tree is along one of the rim trails at Dead Horse Point.Time
I love being out at night. Most of the time there is no one around and you are free to compose a shot as you want without worrying about infringing on others. This shot was taken in March around 4:30 am, so the Milky Way was very low.Lighting
We lit the tree and side bush with a flashlight. Ten exposures for the Milky Way, two for the foreground. Keeping the lighting at a low enough intensity was a challenge.Equipment
Nikon D750, Samsung 14-24mm, f2.8 lens mounted on a Benro tripod with a RRS ball head. Truthfully, someone with good skills could take this shot with almost any camera.Inspiration
The scene was absolutely stunning. The Milky Way was so bright and clear. It was quite easy to see with the naked eye. We caught the scene at just the right moment with the angle of the tree matching the angle of the Milky Way.Editing
All night shots take extensive post processing. I first stacked the ten Milky Way shots for noise reduction using Sequator. I then bended that shot with the two shots for the lit foreground. Toning and color adjustments were done in ACR and Photoshop. In my camera bag
Always have two camera bodies, both Nikon;14-24mm, 24-70mm, and 28-300mm Nikon lenses. Never leave home without an intervalometer, extra batteries, warm gloves, and a hat; that is for three seasons of the year.Feedback
The key to fun, enjoyable night photography is familiarity with your equipment and searching in the daylight hours for compositions. Experimenting with low level lighting or very long foreground exposures adds to the enjoyment. Practice close to home before investing in an expensive long-distance night photo trip.
