Before the Covid Pandemic set in, my wife and I went on a February trip to Norway to photograph the Northern Lights. We traveled by ship to several ports well above the Arctic Circle. The sunsets at around 4:00, and on a clear day, its colors are unlike any I have ever seen. This image was taken from the ship as we approached a port.Time
Since the sun sets around 4:00 above the Arctic Circle in February, this image was captured quite early in the afternoon, 3:39 on February 18, 2020. At that time the sun is at a very sever angle creating beautiful color and shadows.Lighting
Clearly, the story is the sun reflecting off eh snow and the calm water as we approached port. In processing I wanted the viewer to "feel" the color as much as see it.Equipment
Shot with Nikon Z6 with 28 - 300mm at around 50mm, f8. I cropped part of the image on the right side because it did not add to the composition.Inspiration
We were enjoying the view from a lounge in the front of the ship when I saw the light changing to a beautiful yellow hue. I immediately went outside and began looking for where the sunlight was hitting the snow. That the mountain also was being reflected in the semi-calm water was an extra bonus.Editing
I did the usual tone and color adjustments, then I dodged and burned for depth, intensified the colors, added a gradient to tie the colors together, balanced the exposure, and added a slight vignette.In my camera bag
When I travel I carry two bodies, one for back-up and three lens. My Nikon Z6 is my primary body and a Nikon D750 is my back up. My favorite photography is night scenes, so I always have my Sigma 14-24 f2.8 and Nikon 24-70 f2.8. My walking around lens is Nikon 28-300 because of the wide range of focal lengths. The only filter I use is a circular polarizer. I always have a tripod and remote shutter release.Feedback
Be quick!! This light lasted maybe five minutes and the sun was gone below the horizon. Follow the light--it all about the light. Look around not only for where the light is hitting, but the direction relative to you. I was lucky in this shot that the light was coming from the right side thereby providing a lot of texture on the mountain.
