Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken as my husband and I were riding on our Harley on US Route 22 in Ohio. The sky seemed so wide and open and the clouds so huge and full I had to take the opportunity to capture it.

Time

It was a beautiful afternoon when I took this picture. I remember it was hot that day because the warmth of the hot sun mixes with the cool wind so perfectly while we're riding. It's such a unique feeling of peace, relaxation, and excitement all at once.

Lighting

I got lucky that day to be in the right place at the right time in open natural sunlight.

Equipment

Most of my photos are taken from the back of a moving motorcycle so equipment has to be minimal. The only equipment I use is the camera on my Moto Z3 and then do some slight editing afterwards to brighten and sharpen the image.

Inspiration

When I'm on the Harley with my husband I feel closer to him, God, nature, myself, and truly everything in general. It's my place to relax, reconnect, look inward, and soak in the beauty of our surroundings. There's something different about seeing nature from the back of a motorcycle, it's more of a feeling of being *in* your surroundings and being a part of them instead of just seeing them. That is what I try to capture with my photos. The sky is my favorite subject because it's always changing and I never know what I'll get. The sky was so blue and the clouds so large and low, I knew I had to get a shot of it.

Editing

I did very little post-processing for this photo. I was lucky to have gotten the shot on a clear and bright day so all I did was sharpen and brighten the image to allow the colors to really show through as best they could.

In my camera bag

Because the majority of my photos are taken during a long motorcycle ride with a group of other riders, I rarely get the opportunity to stop and take photos while standing still so almost all of my photos are taken while riding which means carrying as little equipment as possible so usually I only use the camera on my Moto Z3, but occasionally I'll use my Hasselblad camera mod for it instead which adds more options and better quality photos.

Feedback

The sky almost always presents a photo op because of how it's always changing. You never know exactly what you're going to get and going to different locations can give you even more options. What I've learned is that a photo of the sky with some other scenery in it as well, even if it just takes up a very small amount of the photo itself, tends to make it more interesting and give it more depth as opposed to a shot of just the sky alone. Photographs taken when the sky is a bright blue and even just dotted with clouds was the easiest for me to start out with and doing that, I was able to learn to get different types of shots from different angles. For me personally, it's very much been a learn-as-you-go type of thing and it's also been very enjoyable doing it that way. I'm still learning and growing in my photography journey, of course, so I'm not the best one to offer advice, but keep getting those shots and keep practicing and get those shots you love and you'll find that maybe they inspire the same feelings in someone viewing your photos as you feel when taking them!
