Location
I’m fortunate to live on a mountaintop farm in the rural South, place of my birth and retirement—and locale of this image. No smog, blue skies, and terrific sunsets, which generously pose for as many shots as my ever-present cell phone can capture.Time
I adore Southern winters: no mosquitoes, even in late afternoon. There are several ponds near my place, breeding ground for comical toads and less agreeable things. Come warm weather, you’re either slathered in insect repellant or covered in mosquito bites. In winter, I’m free to enjoy my favorite time of day. Dusk is the October of a 24-hour period, the “season” of transition, interesting colors, evocative mood.Lighting
I wanted a sense of chill, so I watched for a moment which would convey that —not hot oranges or passionate crimsons but cooler, softer yellows and pinks and fading blues.Equipment

The sheer joy of being outdoors in bracing weather and marveling at the world around me.Editing
I played with highlights and contrast a bit, toning down rather than amplifying. Really a tweak, not a major revamp. In my camera bag
My “bag” is the back pocket of my jeans, just the right size for my phone.Feedback
I’m a hands-on learner. Instructions are excellent reading material for falling asleep or daydreaming my next writing project. Some minds can embrace theory; others learn through application. For subject matter, find the extraordinary in ordinary moments, especially when exotic travel is not an option.
