This is my fur baby Apollo, he is without a doubt a shining light in these very chaotic times. This particular occasion, I had got my studio set up in the lounge, the intention? Still life, to work on a concept for a horror-sci-fi themed shoot (images of dolls) However, as soon as I flicked the lamps on, boom, his bottom, pride of place, perfectly aligned with my camera. Now, this isn't the first time he has done this, so I have 1000's of him, so I moved him down. Nope, in Pollo's world that meant he just had to try a little harder. This was when i gave in, I'm glad I did, as these are the best shots of him I have ever got.

Behind The Lens

Location

This shoot wasn't intended in the slightest. I'd actually just set up the studio, ready to do some product shots, when in he came, bounded straight onto the counter and just sat smugly. I ended up taking around 100 shots of him, got around 4-5 really cracking shots.

Time

This happened first thing, you know, when you're still trying to get the brain fully functioning. Post coffee 1 and pre coffee 2. Basically, I was still wanting to be in the land of nod. Pollo, taking full advantage of my zombified state, to get free head shots.

Lighting

I'm a huge fan of natural lighting, however for this shoot I used primarily a soft box light. With animals, you can't direct them. Well, you can try, but Cats are notorious for doing what they like anyway. My top tip is to always remember to move your light before your model. Take a few shots move the light, take some more, so on and so forth. Angle and distance of light changes everything! Get creative and have fun, look at what you get later.

Equipment

Nikon D7100, Neewer lighting rig with soft box attachment. It was one of my more basic shoots, but I think that's why they turned out so well. I wasn't focusing on the technical side, I was just trying to make my cat feel like a Vogue Model.

Inspiration

Pollos incredible cheekiness, I've personified this kitty his entire life and boy does he own it! The bond we've got helps me to capture him in his natural manner, and show what I see everyday.

Editing

I did do a little, just to bring out the shadows in certain areas and touch up a little spot of muck he had on his paw. I thought it looked cute, but Pollo felt like it drew the eye..haha

In my camera bag

I carry my Nikon, Icon 35mm, and my fuji instamatic everywhere, I tend to carry more mediums than lenses. When I'm intentionally going out to photograph landscapes or wildlife, then my lenses come out. Another thing I always carry, are light pens. If you've never done light painting, you HAVE to try it! Finding little obscure areas and creating objects with light...now that's Fun!

Feedback

Have fun Relax Let the animal do their thing, never force them to do things, it's cruel and they won't like you for it. Change your angle Change the light position Just take images Review all together not after each shot.
