It was a real adventure to take this photo. The car got stuck in the snow and we had to be towed out! I had wanted to capture the desolation of the dead in the graveyard in the snow!

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo near Ebensburg, Pennsylvania in the USA. I was looking for a bleak scene to illustrate a blog post and saw the snow drifting across the graveyard. I asked my friend to take a turn into the graveyard so I could take the photograph. This monument stood out as the stillness and the coldness of death. Yet at the same time the peace of the final rest with the angel standing guard, with his foot on death waiting for the new life at the resurrection of the dead. {An aside, I will never forget this as the car got stuck in the snow and we had to be towed out of the graveyard!)

Time

I think this was around mid-day as I needed fairly good light and in winter the light goes early. the natural light and the reflected light from the snow made it an excellent time of day, You can see there were no shadows cast.

Lighting

I had really wanted to take the picture with the snow drifting past, but it had stopped blowing just before I took the photograph and maybe it was better so!

Equipment

I merely used my Samsung phone camera.

Inspiration

I have a blog in which I run stories about life transitions, and as it was winter, it seemed a good opportunity to write about death (obviously not a really popular subject!) Passing this graveyard in Pennsylvania certainly got my creative juices thinking about ways in which I could write about it with also a positive spin. I wrote two blog posts, here is the link to one of them! The photograph I used for this one was the sight that made me stop to take this photo in the first place! https://crossingmybridges.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=277&action=edit&calypsoify=1

Editing

I had no further processing, this is the raw photograph off my camera

In my camera bag

At this point in my life, I only carry my phone camera, I do have a small Canon Powershot SD450 Digital Elph, but as it runs out of battery quite quickly and does not seem to take as good a photograph as my Samsung phone, I know I will always have my phone on me to take those shots that sudden inspiration calls you to take.

Feedback

My biggest takeaway from shooting this picture is to make sure you know where you are driving! Snow covers both grass and pavements and you can't tell the difference in a graveyard, so we got stuck! Also to show respect for the dead, as this was a very peaceful place of rest. Keep your eyes open for every opportunity!
