Location
This is a photo of our sweet little farm cat named “Mew”. She was walking through an area of downed leaves while I was taking some shots of autumn colors when she stopped and looked at me. My camera was ready to go and I got a quick picture of her.Time
This was morning on a warm autumn day.Lighting
The sky was covered in a light cloudy haze giving a very nice soft lighting effect. That is why I was doing some photos of autumn colors as the soft lighting gives a deeper rendition of the natural colors.Equipment
On that particular day I was shooting mainly autumn trees and colored leaves using a hand held Nikon D5500 with an 18 mm to 140 mm zoom lens. This allows freedom to frame various compositions while walking through a forested area.Inspiration
While walking through a wooded area on our farm, our cat “Mew” was following me at a distance. At one point she stopped to rest and I noticed her cute pose. Since my camera was already set for that lighting situation I zoomed in to her and was able to snap a few shots with various depth of fields. I was able to get a nice shallow depth of field with a wide open f stop in the partial shade.Editing
Very little post processing. Just a light vignette to darken the edges and a slight color enhancement. No cropping or other adjustments were needed. In my camera bag
I usually carry an additional zoom lens, 55 mm to 300 mm, in my camera bag along with a tripod to use with it. A Nikon flash unit. Also a wide assortment of filters which I need to use more often but always seem to forget about them. Filters such as close up filters, starburst, polarizing, soft focus, red and blue filters.Feedback
Animals and pets can often give us beautiful poses which get lost because our camera is too far away or not set up properly. When outdoors with pets keep a sharp eye on them as possible subjects as you are doing other activities but keep your camera nearby and set properly for the average lighting at that time. You know your pet and their habits so watch for those clues to what they are about to do.
