Location
I took this photo in my pasture adjoining my home in Midland, TX. where I raised Arabian horses for 35 years.Time
The time of day was mid-afternoon on a cloudy day.Lighting
I wanted an intimate photo that showed a mare's love for her foal. The lighting was naturalEquipment
This is an old photo taken by a Canon film with a Camera zoom lens at 125mm.Inspiration
This mare's beauty and that of her foals inspired me to take many photos of them. She was extremely photogenic and produced gorgeous foals that accomplished many show-ring wins. One of her foals was exported to South America. I would sit in the grass and just wait for the ideal pose.Editing
There was no post processing other than cropping and adding a highlight in the foals eyeIn my camera bag
I use a Canon EOS D60 with a Canon 70-300 zoom lens. I also carry a Sony Cybershot with a built in lens from 24 to 1200.Feedback
When photographing horses, it is best to not be too close as the horse will be distorted. I like to be at their level never shooting from above. It takes a great deal of patience, often hours, to catch just the right pose.
