Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my back yard while Maxx was looking at a squirrel that was chirping at him. He is such an active boy that it's difficult to get a still shot of him. This dog truly understands English. The first day I got him home I said "lets go get the newspaper for Terry (my husband) and we walked outside, he picked it up and we went to Terry, who was in bed, and he dropped the paper by him. This was at age three months. We have done that every day for five years. It's a wonderful way to celebrate each new day with praise and affection. When he lost his ball, I told him I couldn't find it and I said "Show me!" and he went right to the couch, stuck his nose under it and voila, there was the ball. He knew what 'show me' meant the first time I said it. He is truly my heart and soul. NancyTubb

Time

This was early evening when the light was low. I had a fill in flash.

Lighting

I prefer natural light early in the day or last in the afternoon when the light and shadows are not sharp.

Equipment

I used a Canon EOS 60D with a Canon zoom lens 70-300.

Inspiration

I take my camera with me nearly everywhere and was so happy to capture his expression of interest in the squirrel.

Editing

No post processing other than cropping and removing the flash from his eye and adding the highlight.

In my camera bag

Bring a person who doesn't like to carry alot of equipment, I had only the camera with me. When I go to a photoshoot, I take my Canon everywhere and usually use the lens that I used for this photo.

Feedback

When photographing an animal, it is best to be at their eye level. Shooting down diminishes the dogs size and proportions. When shooting horses, it is helpful to have something that they are not used to seeing such as an umbrella to open.......just as it does, the horse's ears will be alert and all his/her attention will be on that foreign object.
