Behind The Lens

Location

Taken during high tide at porthcawl sea front

Time

This was taken early evening during quite windy weather, while we were hiding from water being thrown over the wall by rough seas. There were plenty of people getting soaked by rogue waves.

Lighting

Lighting for this was quite tricky, I couldn’t set up the tripod as we had to move at a moments notice or get soaked. The street lights were throwing of the late evening sky so it was a case of leaning on a wall for stability.

Equipment

This was taken with the Nikon d810 and the Nikkor 24-70mm 2.8 VR lens

Inspiration

Honestly, the spot is renowned for the waves crashing over the light house (which is behind me) and it’s a very common spot for wild weather photos, so I just wanted something different

Editing

Very minimal post processing I used light room to adjust exposure especially around the street lights against the sky but as for photo photo - I don’t use it (too technical)

In my camera bag

Nikon D810 Nikkor 2.8 VR 24-70 mm Nikkor 1.8 50 mm Tripod And some Cokin filters if I’m going after landscapes and the excellent cokin nuances 32 ND 5 stop.

Feedback

Don’t be afraid to get involved (obviously stay safe) but even if it’s taking photos or landscapes, seascapes or rivers I’m usually soaked or freezing. You can plan as much as you like I always check tide times or sun rise/ set times but it rarely goes to plan and usually end up muddy or soaked. Don’t take it too seriously - enjoy and have fun your photos will be better for it. And also don’t be upset if you come home with nothing there is alway tomorrow and it’s just another excuse to be out in nature with a camera doing what you love - after all isn’t that the point ?
