Location
This photo was taken just outside the city of Ulaanbaatar Mongolia after sharing a wonderfully hospitable drink of suutei tsai (milk tea).Time
Shot in early November and after driving along a rough track we arrived a little later than expected but still just in time for the golden hour, around 4:30 in the afternoon.Lighting
As the sun set behind the hill we had to quickly change model and camera positions avoiding reflecting facial highlights and deepening shadows while still getting that golden glow.Equipment
Canon 70D, canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM, ISO 100, 50mm, f/8, 1/400s; a golden collapsible reflector was also used at the time but I don't think it was used in this particular shot.Inspiration
I wanted a natural relaxed warm feeling to compliment the warm Yak wool clothing the girl is wearing, the Mongolian hospitality i receave every day i'm here, and the natral beauty of the landscape. I thought the holding yard/fence and sadle that was placed there by the hearders and the angle the sun was at was perfect for this shot.Editing
On this shot not a lot was needed, I reduced the highlights a little and lightened the shadows so that the colour of the clothing, particularly the leggings) was more accurate. In my camera bag
In addition to the equipment mentioned above, I have 3 batteries, a small sandbag, UV filter and 10 grad filter in my small camera bag (minus the reflector) and in a backpack, I'll also carry a flash, 50mm prime, 55-250mm, microphone and an old spare 60D.Feedback
If going for the golden hour allow more time for city traffic - but whatever you do, even if you're a little late, don't miss out on the hospitality, take your time with the people, that's the best experience you'll have.
