I would like to start by saying that the baby horse, was not hurt during the making of this photo.
This image was produced in collaboration with the very talented costume designers from www.thespecialguest.nl . The idea behind the image was to produce scenarios that would highlight their amazing costumes. For this particular outfit, we went for a horror-Halloween theme.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the farm of one of the models. It was the place that the baby horse was most comfortable with.

Time

We were shooting the entire day, and this image ended up being shot somewhere in the afternoon. This was good, because the horse got a chance to get used to all of us and all the gear.

Lighting

As i knew that this image would end up being a composite, i shot it quite flat. We were lucky that it was an overcast day, so I was able to relay on the natural light.

Equipment

The starting image was shot handheld on a Sony A7RII paired with the Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 at 1-640, F4, iso250. No other equipment was involved as far as I remember.

Inspiration

The idea for this image came from the costume designer, who wanted a horror themed image for Halloween. It was a spontaneous decision, as we thought that goblins must be hungry and want to eat. In the initial shoot list we had other images planned for these costumes.

Editing

This is a composite image made form 6 or 7 images. 2 for the goblins with the baby horse and the rest either from past projects or from the internet. Bits and pieces were taken from them, to construct the cut and blood splash. the sky has been replaced as well, to make it look more menacing. Particles and debris were added in the air to enhance the atmosphere. As for the color grading, I opted for a dark, saturated and contrasty look.

In my camera bag

I make my bag according to each assignment. However, if it is not a big project and I just want to walk around and capture what i see, i prefer to have 1 camera my sony a7RII, 2-3 extra batteries and 1 lens (lately, the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8). Each one of my bags, has a lens cleaning cloth, a coin for the tripod mount and a few business cards.

Feedback

Try to have a clear idea of the final result. If you can, try to sketch it out and then write down all the props and the elements that will appear in the image. Next, think about the color and general feel, this will inform you on how the light should be. In the case of an image like this one, a dark and moody day is perfect. Other than that look up how to composite in Photoshop.
