Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken of my daughter at home in our dining room, I used a black sheet and hung it over my kitchen counter. It’s amazing was materials you can use that work great.

Time

My daughter had been at school that day so I didn’t take this photo till about 5.30pm that evening.

Lighting

As it was 5.30pm it was quite dark outside so I used my photography light, I used it to light up her left side more than the right as I wanted to experiment with shadows.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D5600 camera & my photography light, aswell as a black sheet to act as a backdrop. I used an oversized hat for prop :)

Inspiration

I just love portrait photos and close ups of people’s faces and peoples expressions, mysterious looks etc. I really wanted to experiment myself by taking a similar photo. And so my daughter agreed to be my model :)

Editing

Yes. I used an app to do some editing. I enhanced the detailed areas (eyes, lips, hat) I softened the curls a little. As you can see I changed the picture from colour to a black and white as I feel this adds more mystery or drama. I then used a colour pick (black) to make sure all parts of the background were black and smooth out any creases from the sheet.

In my camera bag

I carry my Nikon D5600 camera, battery charger, spare battery, memory cards, cleaning cloth for the lens.

Feedback

Experiment, Have fun, try out different angles. Get creative with props and different looks. Don’t be afraid to be different or stand out.
