Location
This photos was taken at a gym during a photo shoot with one of the coaches. He is leaving the gym so we wanted todo some farewell photos. I put up a black background to focus on the lighting and shaping of the body through light.Time
The picture was taken at the evening, but since flash was used to overpower the ambient light it could have been taken at any time.Lighting
It was taken with three flashes. The main light had a big softbox on it and the two other lights were strip lights. The additional flashes were just used to sculpture the body against the black backdrop.Equipment
Nikon D850 with Sigma Art 85mm 1.4 and three Godox flashes (AD200 + 2 V1) with one softbox and two strip boxes.Inspiration
The main idea of the photoshoot was to play around with different light setups, while including gym equipment to get into natural poses. In this case I wanted to feature the upper body while still giving a hint of the face, but only in a mysterious way. So I places the main light to feature the torso, let him lift the arms with the barbell and turn the head to achieve a very split lighted effect on the face. To not get lost in the background, strip lights were used to highlight the back a little bit.Editing
Nothing crazy: Just Lightroom, boosting contrasts, turn to black and white and finetune the desired effect. In my camera bag
I always bring a Nikon D850 as my main camera, a D750 as a backup and the 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 as work horses. Depending on the situation I also bring a Sigma Art 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.4, 105mm 1.4 or 14-24 2.0. I also always have a Godox V1 in my bag with various modifiers and filters from Magmod.Feedback
