I took this photo on the Gale River in Bethlehem, NH. It's actually visible from the road but I went right into the water (in water shoes) so I could get this particular shot.Time
It was early afternoon and the temps were incredibly warm for this time of year so it was easy to go in the water!Lighting
This particular area is one of my favorite places to capture Autumn reflection but I only have a short window of time. The sunlight hits the trees in the early afternoon and the water is completely shadowed so it makes for the best reflection. I come here every year but don't always make it while the leaves are all in full color. Also, I've tried to get this shot from the riverbank and just can't quite make it. This year I realized I could get it if I was IN the water, so off I went. (Yes, it was VERY cold, but the air was really warm so it was worth it!)Equipment
I use a Canon 7D and shot F22, 1/8 and an ISO of 100. I recently started using filters but not for this one. I'm looking forward to incorporating those next year.Inspiration
You can see this spot right off the main road and for years I would drive by when I used to vacation up here. Now that I live here I thought it was high time I spent a few days each Fall just driving around to my favorite locations. It's my own personal staycation time. (I also take that time during the first snowfall.)Editing
I use both photoshop and Lightroom but for this it was just a short tweak. I took the liberty of increasing the brightness a bit and a little bit of saturation. In my camera bag
I usually have my Canon 7D, my tripod, and my two favorite lenses (20-35mm and 70-200mm). I recently added an assortment of filters thanks to a visiting photographer who showed me what I could do with them. I love to shoot rivers and waterfalls and I am having a great time learning as I go. (I've only been photographing landscapes for a short time and have had no professional training so everything I learn is fun!)Feedback
Autumn is a great season to get out and capture Mother Nature's paintings. This year we had an unusually short season due to weather, but there's always something to find. My advice is to keep your camera on you at all times and just prior to the leaves changing, take a look at places you might be interested in going to, then simply watch the area because once they change, you have a short window. Keep in mind that although a bright sunny day makes the leaves shine, it's not always the best lighting for your photos. Every area is different so pay attention to the time of day when you are doing your research and it will help you plan ahead.
