Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken right off the back porch of a townhome we were renting in Bretton Woods. This little beauty showed up every night we were there and although he or she kept some distance, it was clearly due to caution, not fear.

Time

This was taken just around what would normally be sunset, but winters up here are more often than not on the cloudy side as we tend to get snow nearly every evening. This is basically at the base of Mt Washington in NH.

Lighting

I got lucky with the lighting, no sun because it was cloudy, but it was late in the afternoon.

Equipment

This is actually an older photo that I've shared and it was taken with my Canon Rebel (SLR) and a 300mm lens.

Inspiration

At the time this was taken I had just started to get interested in taking photos other than family and friends. I loved that I had a chance to photograph a wild animal! Even to this day, this remains one of my favorite photos, although I have photographed so many more foxes, moose and bears since then. There's a certain little thrill that runs through me when I get a shot I really love.

Editing

Because this is an old film shot, this has actually been scanned and saved to my photos. I never developed it myself.

In my camera bag

I usually carry my Canon 7D, a 20-35mm lens and my fav - my 70-200 lens. It wieghs a little more than I'd like but as I hike a lot, I've learned the hard way that you'll be very disappointed to miss a great shot because you didn't want to carry a couple extra pounds. I also make sure to bring my tripod. My new favorite subject is water. I'm amazed at what you can get with the tripod. (Again, keep in mind that you are adding extra weight, but not too much and it really makes a difference. It also never hurts to pack an extra battery, memory card, and lens wipes!

Feedback

For a shot like this, you need two things. Patience and luck. Patience because you can't make a wild animal pose for you, and luck because you need to find one!
