Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo during my first trip after lockdown 1 in 2020, we had planned a few trips and this was the only one we managed, it was a great feeling to be able to get out into such expanse for the first time in so long.

Time

This photo was taken at around half past one in the afternoon, we had driven from Suffolk to Wales, and jumped straight onto climbing Snowdon on the hottest day of the year, I spent quite a while looking for the perfect composition of the summit.

Lighting

The lighting was excellent for this shot, it was just after midday so the sun was just past the peak and gave some excellent shadows to bring real Sesotho to the mountain.

Equipment

I used a Sony A6000 with Sonys 18-105mm lens, this is an excellent setup for hiking/ climbing as it’s so light and versatile.

Inspiration

I just wanted to capture the feeling of relief and freedom are yet what had been a very hard start to 2020, I wanted to get a photo that expressed my love of exploration and the outdoors.

Editing

This was a particularly busy day on Snowdon, so I spent a lot of time cloning out other hikers that were scattered over the landscape, other than that I did some light dodging and burning to bring some depth to the photo, and enhanced the colours and temperature to better reflect what it was really like on the mountain.

In my camera bag

Usually I will carry my Sony A7ii with a 24-70mm and a 16-35mm, as well as my A6000 and 18-105mm. As well as these I will always have spare batteries! A remote trigger and tripod are usually featured, along with some ND and polarising filters, and I’ll occasionally throw in a speed light just in case.

Feedback

I find the best way to capture something like this is to just keep being out, a lot of my favourite images have been taken completely unplanned, or as a last minute decision to go out. The more you are out and about, the more comfortable you will be with your camera, and then you will find you capture more of what you want to see.
