Behind The Lens

Location

I took it in Frade Island, in Douro Estuary, in Oporto, Portugal.

Time

It was middle after noon, 16:43, more exactly.

Lighting

I soaked wet my feet and part of my legs but, it worth it, I took a bunch of great photographies.

Equipment

I used a Canon EOS 550D and a Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS (hand-held).

Inspiration

All that birds of so many different species flying and swimming around on that island. The tide was the lowest I've ever seen in that place and all that sand and mud, all that bird diversaty like this Grey heron, Ruddy turnstones, Mallards, goose and several other water birds, helped me to take some great shots.

Editing

Yes, I allways soot in raw (cr2) format and, then I treat my chosen files and I export them to 8bit JPG's. In this case, as usual, I did not make any hard treatment. I hardly remenber this case in particular but, I think I increased a bit the contrast, added a bit of black, increased a bit the exposition, saturated it a little bit and I think it was it. By the way, in this image, I used the Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0.

In my camera bag

In recent times, I usually have a Canon EOS 550D, a Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS, a Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM, a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II, a polariser filter, a variable neutral density filter, a Yongnuo YN500EX, a cable realise and a bunch or other various accessories.

Feedback

Be patient, hide behind something, change quickly your camera settings to fit the light conditions in every moment (spot meter I think is the way to go), try always to focus on the bird eyes and a decent telephoto lens is important too.
