I spent several hours wandering around this giant grove of coastal redwoods. I had the whole place to myself as the sun set and dusk settled upon the forest. I sat down on a bench under a particularly massive tree. I closed my eyes and tuned into the quiet stillness and cool damp air. I noticed how fresh the air smelled and tasted as I was breathing. I suddenly had a vision of what magnificent structures these trees were. I could see the roots stretching down through the earth for hundreds of feet right underneath me, creating massive living networks of mycelium, insects and bacteria. The most advanced form of biological architecture and technology stretching to the heavens, absorbing the carbon in the air, storing it on its body and releasing clean oxygen for other life forms to breath. Siphoning water from the ground up through their massive trunks all the way to their full canopy, where the greenery converts sunlight into energy.
I have found nothing more vibrant and sacred than old growth forests. The health of this planet and our species depends on healthy forests and trees. We need to protect them, instead of cut them down for profit.
