Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in a public garden. I like flowers so as soon as I saw it I decided to take a picture.

Time

The time I took this photo was around 8.00 AM.

Lighting

The flower was under a tree and the sun was not bright yet, and the shade of the tree made it an ideal time and place. I needed no extra lighting such as a flash light, as it was already a perfect lighted scene.

Equipment

I used a Canon EOS 500D (T1i). I had just bought the 50 mm lens and I was looking very forward to try it for the first time. I was happy with the result and it seems many people like the photo as well. I love it because it is my very first attempt on flowers. I used no tripod.

Inspiration

As I love flowers so much, I decided to try and see how best to take the photo. I used exposure time of 1/80 shutter speed, and F/1.8 with ISO 100, the white balance was on Auto. The metering mode was on Matrix. Exposure Program was Manual.

Editing

I did not use any post-processing. I still need to learn how to do it.

In my camera bag

The first thing I put in my bag is the 50 mm lens, as it creates a beautiful blurred background. I am longing to buy a 100 mm lens in the near future too, as it is good for portraits and it also makes lovely blurred backrounds. I also carry an 18-55mm lens and an 18-135mm lens.

Feedback

Try to experiment with different subjects and during all hours of the day, but when it is during sunrise and sunset I can say that it is the perfect time of the day to take photo shots. Different angles and different compositions also help for a better photo. Always remember the shutter speed should not be less than the focal number of the lens, for example. a 100mm should have a shutter speed of 1/100 at least and not slower as the photo will be blurry and not sharp. A 50mm lens should have a 1/60 on a full frame camera or a 1/80 on a crop sensor camera. A 200mm lens should have 1/200 and not less.
