Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Victorville, CA in a lakeside community called Spring Valley Lake. My friend has a home there and this is the beautiful view is from his dock.

Time

This was right after sunset, just moments. The sky began to get this purple-blue glow and the water was like glass, so still. A beautiful, quiet moment.

Lighting

Since I shoot with a pocket camera, raw, I rarely use flash. I just try to look for those moments when colors in the sky start to merge into one and I feel an emotional connection to that moment and capture it. I love natural light, usually sunlight, so this was a nice departure for me...almost dark.

Equipment

The camera I used for this shot was a Canon PowerShot Digital Elph SD1100 IS. 8.0MP. Nothing fancy, but very easy to shoot with and easy to take with you anywhere, anytime. No tripod, handheld.

Inspiration

What inspired me was the color of the sky so perfectly reflected on the still water's surface. It was like someone laid a huge mirror out in front of the houses and I just had to take a photo and share it.

Editing

I did flip this photo upside down. I felt like I wanted others to see this from a different perspective. The flip of the photo showed something so similar to the right side up photo, but yet, just different enough to make you take a second look to figure it out. Other than that, no edits.

In my camera bag

Just my cameras in my pocket or purse. I shoot with two Canon's now days. This photo was in the beginning of me exploring photography. Now I have another Canon PowerShot Elph...an SD970 IS, that I use for macro photography, and a Canon PowerShot Elph 100HS for all other types of quick shutter shots, for landscapes and the photos I take of my rescue pigeon at play and in flight. I have no external lenses or flashes and do not use a tripod.

Feedback

I would say that patience and stillness are the biggest pointers I could give to help capture a nice photo. I tend to be emotionally connected to the moments I shoot and it is like a feeling that bubbles up in you when you see something so beautiful or moving that you just must take the photo. I recommend becoming an observer. When you see it, you will know, you will react, and then you will be able to share that with others. I hope you like what you see and it elicits a feeling in you as if you were there with me.
