Behind The Lens

Location

This photo of my doggy daughter Dusty Mama, a.k.a. "Pretty Princess Fur Pants", was taken on our couch in my living room in a pile of comfy warm blankets in October.

Time

This was around 2pm and Dusty was watching me and falling asleep for her midday nap. Sleep is so very important to Chihuahuas.

Lighting

There is a large window over our couch, and the fall light was coming in over us and at just the right angles to create a reflection in her eye.

Equipment

I shot this photo with my Canon PowerShot SD970is Digital Elph, point and shoot camera. It does not have an external lens and is very compact and easy to carry around or throw in my purse. I do not use a tripod because I am usually getting very close to fast moving subjects and I am on the move along with them to get the shots.

Inspiration

I would have to say, simply, love. Dusty Mama is my fur-baby. We have been together since the day she was born, going on nine years now in July. At the time of the photo she was three years old, still a puppy and always interested in anything I was doing. My passion is macro photography which I do all of in my own backyard, specializing in Jumping Spiders and insects. Dusty is always right next to me as I take photos. At the time of this photo she would even help me to find grasshoppers by sniffing them out and pawing the ground near them to alert me. Although she has lost interest in the grasshoppers as she has aged, she is still always right next to me at all times and I adore her more than I can express. When I shot this photo, I just looked over at her, looking at me with those honey eyes of hers, and knew I wanted to capture the moment. The angle of her ear and the contrasting blankets and colors just made this a memorable moment. I feel so grateful to be loved by her, and I never pass up an opportunity to take her photo!

Editing

I do not yet do any editing on my photos. I am a very big fan of "what you see is what you get" and although this may make me very old fashioned, I just love to look back on my photos and see exactly what I saw on that day, in its unedited, unaltered form. I do hope to learn how to edit in the future as it is a skill I am sure I should know by now.

In my camera bag

When I am going out in my backyard to photograph nature, my favorite camera to shoot with is my Canon PowerShot SD1200is Digital Elph, 10mp. I do not use a tripod and there are no external lenses on my cameras so I can put one in each back pocket of my jeans and travel very light. My other favorite camera is the one I shot this photo with. It is a 12mp, and I get some great details with my macro shots using the digital macro settings. The other item I always have with me is a lens cleaning cloth. I live in a very windy desert climate so I encounter lots of dust and debris that I need to keep off my tiny lens. If I am going to be photographing my rescue pigeons who move very quickly, I also pack my Canon PowerShot 100HS which is great for high speed shots and super vivid color setting. So, I don't have a "bag" but I've got pockets and thankfully, that is all I need.

Feedback

I would have to say that sometimes having a smaller camera makes it much easier to capture moments like this. Without bulky lenses or heaviness, you can grab your point and shoot and just snap away if the moment strikes you. With a tiny camera you can get very, very close to your subjects which creates an intimacy that I think relays the pure emotions of the moment in your photographs. In this shot, if you look in Dusty's eye, you can see me there along with my camera and the window behind me with the blue sky. It was up close and personal, and as long as you are not photographing alligators or lions, you just might find you capture a moment you can cherish forever!
