So, in my continued adventures around Western North Carolina I have found a new place! I lived less than ten miles from this area called Cliffside Lake in Highlands NC. I saw this composition from the road, but I decided to hike the entire circumference of the lake. Only 3-4 of a mile [Yes, that's just a large pond], but as I am also using photography to get myself in better shape it was a good hike for me. Saw several shots I wanted to take, but none of them were this composition, not as clean. I used my Joby Gorilla Pod 5k for the first time here, up on top of the downed tree, using it as a leading line across the lake. Capturing the reflections and the fall colors.

Location
This was taken in Western North Carolina, Highlands, A place called Cliff Side Lake.Time
This was taken at golden hour, the sun was setting behind the tree line, and the light was fading rather quickly.Lighting
I spotted this composition when I first arrived at the location, but wanted to take a long walk around the lake to see if I could make use of it in another facet. In the end, I couldn't shake the notion this was going to be my main composition form the trip. The fall colors were looking good, and despite being a mostly clear day, this came out well.Equipment
A Fuji XT-3, a Joby Gorilla Pod, and a release trigger. On this image I used my 10-24 lens to really show some depth and make the scene look a bit larger than it was.Inspiration
Fall colors, sense of adventure, and going to places I'd never been to before. Over the year I have gone exploring, trying to find newer and more interesting places to explore. I think part of photography is really about exploration.Editing
This is a focus stacked image to get my foreground and background in focus in this scene. From the up close, to the more distant. Of course I tweaked the colors to bring our the glow the sun was giving on the trees in the distance. In my camera bag
My gear fluctuates depending on my shoots. I have a Lowepro Phototrekker ba.. I keep a 50-140 f2.8, 16-55 f2.8, 10-24 f4, 18-135 f3.5-5.6, and a 23 f2. I leave some, bring others, though the 50-140, 16-55 are always at hand. The 10-24 comes along frequently, the other two lenses... depends on the goal. I have a 1.4 teleconverter, a set of haida m10 filters, flash, spare batteries, release trigger. I think overall I take more than i need when I go out. Of course I now have a FLM CP34-L4 II and Arcatech Pan Head.Feedback
Keep your eyes open, be patient. Your instincts are usually right, you will get drawn to a scene quickly, take advantage of it. Try to isolate what you're drawn to in a scene, then build a composition around it. Even if things don't come out the way you expected, you can always try again. Most importantly, show up early, so you're never in a rush and miss the small details.
