I love the way the water looks phosphorescent, other-worldy even. This is a great shot.

Location
This photo was taken off the Cullasaja Gorge in Western North Carolina. This is called Dry Falls, very near the town of Highlands.Time
This was taken at around 3 AM on a mostly clear night.Lighting
There are two static lights behind the falls here. Nothing fancy, just some water proof lights you can buy at your local big box store. I tried multiple configurations of lighting down here until this one just seemed to work the best. I also have a flashlight in hand going some light painting along the falls themselves.Equipment
This shot was taken with my Fujifilm XT1 with a XF 18-135 F3.5-5.6. This sat atop my old big heavy studio tripod, no flash.Inspiration
When you live in a magical world like the mountains, it's sometimes difficult to see the scene that no ones taken before. Trying to find your own perspective of something that's been photographed thousands of times, so you have to think creatively. That was my goal, go there when no one else dares to hike down that path. and create my own light, create my own scene.Editing
There was post work down on this photo. Trying to control light levels, even working on colors. Adding perhaps too much clarity, all while trying to find the balance between fantasy and reality. In my camera bag
For the most party I now keep two cameras in my bag. The X-T1, and my newer X-T3. A flash, a leatherman multi tool, gaffe tape, a godox flash, some filters, a 16-55 F2.8. 18-135 f3.5-5.6, 23mm f2. Extra batteries, Joby Gorilla Pod, and a Helikon poncho for summer, or a Swagman Roll in the winter. Most of that is kept in the vehicle until I determine what I need to bring directly to the scene.Feedback
Don't let the little voice tell you that you can't do it. Have patience, and no matter how crazy something sounds, it's worth trying. Photography is like building a house with legos. There's a million ways to go about it. At the time I took this photo in 2015 I was convinced that night photography was my best form of expression, and I did, and tried things that may seem a little crazy to me now, but completely worth it if my viewers enjoy the piece. Always take multiple exposures, even if you think you got the shot, try another angle, try lowering your camera, raising it. Experiment, and most of all... Have Fun, Stay Safe!
