Behind The Lens

Location

This beautiful fall photo was taken right in my own yard. These little "pickles" can be placed anywhere. No need to travel to the end of the earth, when autumn burst with colours right here. Just compliment nature with your subject, and bingo...look at that!

Time

Here is the thing with these "Littles". you can almost work anytime of the day outside. If it is bright and too sunny, because they are small, it is easy then to find some full shaded area to tuck that little basket into. I often do go for the golden hour light, but with a wee one, I can usually work with what I have for daytime. However if I did not have full shade, I would wait for the softer light of the early morning or evening time.

Lighting

The lightening in this photo is perfect to say the least. Even though I can always find small enough shade to use for a wee one, that was not the case this given day. It was a full overcast day! It is my favorite kind of day to photograph babies and children. The sky is a big dissfuser when it is overcast and warm. No shadows fall under or over the eyes or the face of the subjects. The sky light will always have a brighter spot when the sun is, even if it is not shinning... and turning the subject to the brightest part of the sky on an overcast day will bring more light to the face giving a more 3D effect to the subject. A bright well lite face outside is a delight.

Equipment

I am a pentatian. My camera is the latest Pentax Mark 11 K3. I love a good feeling solid camera. It might be my age, as I was a cross over for the old film days. LOL. I love the view finder, the light balance, the levels, and all the wonders that help me get the photo right in the camera. I also used the amazing 70-200mm lens. It is magical, with beautiful bokahs and colours true to what I am seeing. I take all my photos hand help, because with little ones I get right down on the ground...and as they flip and move... I need the same freedom too!

Inspiration

My total inspiration for this photo was the colours in the grasses. I also knew that I had these colours colours in the wardrobe for babies. I wanted to capture the beauty of nature and child in a harmonious way. I new with the sky overcast but bight, the colours jumping out, that a wee little one dressed to match would satisfied my need to create a piece of art that day! Doing such a shoot as this really makes me overjoyed and feeling accomplished.

Editing

My goal is to always get it right in the camera. I take care to adjust my light, my ISO, my aperture, all my numbers before I set up the wee ones and start clicking that camera. I have learned that I can take a good photo, process it, and make it great. I can take a great photo and process it and make it amazing, and I can take an amazing photo, process it and make it a piece of beautiful art! That is why I do the work to get it right in the camera. I take all my photos in RAW, and they require some process in order for them to be JPEG. I do make sure each photo is balanced, lite, and I will pop any colours that are there. I want to do as little processing as possible. All my photo are authentic, not composite or layers, unless that was my project for some kind of art piece. But with my photo , what you see is what I captured. My favorite two programs for processing is Lightroom and ON1. I used photoshop very little.

In my camera bag

My equipment is very humbling. I have my camera..... Pentax K3 Mark 11. I have 3 or 4 lens. 35mm.......50mm...... 16-45mm....and I have 70-200mm (my jewel for photographing children). I rarely use a tripod. I make sure a have extra batteries, and a solid bag to cart it with. That's it!!!

Feedback

To share with others how they might capture something like this photo, it starts with seeing what is around you. Remember to look down, and low. If you see a patch of pure beauty.... then use it. Your light is going to be the important thing. When you look into the camera and it seems dark or too bright, adjust that. Do your very best to get it right in the camera. However if it is not perfect, do remember you can add light and balance in most processing platforms. Overcast days are AMAZING for heading out to make your art, especially with the "Little ones". The other thing is tone on tone. Colour from the same palette look beautiful. Heading out to a wheat field ....gold, yellow and browns will be beautiful on your subjects. Heading to the apple orchard , greens reds, blues, will all pop with the trees, apples and Skys. Try to think about where you are...and what the littles are wearing. Never have cloths with pictures on them, or big logos, or dark colour that tent to look black.... it will distract from your natural settings. Have fun, be inspiring and inspired! CREATE!!!!
