I shot this at sunrise in Joshua Tree National Park. It was eerily silent as we watched the sun creep over the horizon giving us this fiery display.Time
This was sunrise. We left our hotel at 0400 to get to this spot in time. Thankfully my family were troopers for the adventure.Lighting
This was pre-golden hour. I shot it with an long-is exposure, with reduced ISO, relative to shooting towards the light source, to capture the colors and faint light on the tree.Equipment
I used a Canon Eos Rebel with an 18-55 lens. Camera was mounted in a tripod due to longer shutter speed.Inspiration
Sunrise is my favorite time. It is literally the dawn of a new day. Our isolation coupled with the lonely tree with the colorful backdrop was too good to pass up.Editing
I increased the exposure on the bottom half of the photo and modified the vibrancy and saturation in the top half of the photo.In my camera bag
My Canon Eos Rebel always comes with me. I bring my wide angle and telephoto because I never want to wish I had brought something. I always bring my phone, too. The cameras are great and I can post to various platforms after small edits using Adobe CC.Feedback
We lucked out a little with the cloud layer. Great for sunsets but not for Astrophotography. For early morning, have your gear ready to go or a headlamp to set up. These isolated locations are devoid of light. Try longer exposures through sunrise for new looks. Have a filter on hand in case the light is too intense too soon. And don’t be afraid to turn around and see what is being lit up.
