This is a striking image. At first I thought this was beautiful barren tree. This is a fine image of the human form.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was made in my studio so we (the dancer and the photo team) could be more comfortable and were able to spend as much time as needed

Time

it was in the studio, I wasn't aware of the time

Lighting

One big soft box was the only light source. The key aspect of the lighting here was to let the light bounce between the white floor and walls so the whole contrast decrease a bit

Equipment

Nikon d610 with a 50mm 1.4 lens on a tripod (manfrotto) Pau C Buff Einstein Strobe with a big Chimera rectangular soft box

Inspiration

the interaction with a ballet dancer will always trigger new ideas. In this case we took some other photos before and after a break we decided to take a different approach and play with the lines in a more graphic way. After some adjustments this was the final product.

Editing

Just Raw calibration and cleaning the floor (the point of a ballet shoe really damage the studio floor)

In my camera bag

always a 50mm and a wide angle lens with my camera, light meter (I'm old school), a color and gray card, battery and many SD - also a cleaning kit

Feedback

take time to observe and discuss the images with the dancer or model, the creation of an image like this one is a team work. sometimes the feedback that the person in front of the camera can give is more valuable than many photographers would like to admit
