Location
This was taken at Singapore Zoo, June 2019. I have loved animals ever since I was a little girl, so it is my hobby to photograph them whenever and wherever I can. My goal is simple, give life to the photographs you take, and try to capture it at the right moment.Time
This photo was taken around 4pm, 24 June 2019. We were just about to finish our long walk through the zoo, taking as many photographs as possible along the way. We stopped at the pelican enclosure, as I tried to add another animal to my collection of photographs. There were a few shrubs in the way, and it was difficult to get a good shot. It was when I spotted this pelican, a little bit isolated from the others, just peacefully minding its own business as it drifted with the waters right into my camera frame. Its mouth opened wide, as if trying to say something. That was when I took the shot.Lighting
As it was late afternoon, the sunlight was not harsh. This made the details on the pelican more defined in the photograph even though it is not a very colourful bird. Sometimes lighting helps when it comes to making a single-coloured object stand out. And with its reflection in the water due to the nice lighting, it creates a very different mood.Equipment
This photo was shot on a Nikon D7200 with the long lens, handheld. As I am not a professional photographer, my aim is to capture the interesting moments in the best way possible so it attracts an audience.Inspiration
I am inspired by animals and nature in itself, and I appreciate their beauty and existence. These are the things that humans take for granted and should conserve rather than destroy. We don't want to wake up one day in a world without animals, what is life without them? It is like the animals are the dinosaurs and we humans are the meteor that vanquished them all. Like Sir David Attenborough said, the best thing we should do now is to rewild the world. This world does not only belong to human beings.Editing
I did some editing in a mobile application called Snapsneed, to create the black background for the whites of the pelican to stand out more. There were no other complicated editing methods involved. In my camera bag
I usually carry just my Nikon D7200 camera with my two lenses, and a spare battery whenever I go for short expeditions.Feedback
My advice is simple, like my goal of getting into photography. Do not give up on anything you do. If you don't get it the first time, try, and try again. Sometimes things will happen at the right moment, when you least expect it to. If I had given up and walked away because I couldn't get a good shot, I would never have captured this photo.
