"We got it, we got the shot."
"You mean...a shot."
The sun was melting our corneas, it was as if we were trying to photograph the bird as a white light was beamed directly into our eyes. This tiny bird was extremely skittish, so it did not help with our situation at all. A relaxing evening walk by the lake turned into a hilarious scene of a random couple peering into a bush like people who were up to nothing.
The male Splendid Fairywren (Malurus splendens) is a bird that we have always been wanting to spot the moment we saw a photograph of it while idly scrolling through our feed. Saying that this bird is splendid or beautiful is still an understatement when you have seen it in real life.
At the time it was centimetres away from us, simply attractive blue pixels on a screen (just as you are viewing it now). This time, we were watching it in real life, a bright blue fluffball hopping erratically on the ground barely a metre away from us.
It was quick — we were literally finding it through the viewfinder every few seconds when it moved away from its last position. It disappeared into this bush, tweeting to its friend that it was hiding from the bright sunlight, and we started searching for it. This photograph was taken through a tiny opening where the bird was visible.
You do not want to know the number of blurry photographs that were captured — all that could be seen was a flash of blue with two beady eyes staring back at us, as if laughing at our failure.
