Yesterday was the autumn equinox so I spent the morning chasing mist and light around Sutton Park. I had no real agenda, just walked for miles around the woodland and water, seeing what the morning brought to me. I’m trying to let go of expectation and remain open rather than imposing a certain notion of what I want onto a morning. I was exploring. Many years ago I would hunt for Fly Agaric, frustrated that I could never find one at all, let alone intact. I stopped looking. Stopped striving. I felt like the Universe was trying to teach me to just enjoy whatever I found, rather than reject the current for an imagined future. It’s a good lesson for life, but much easier to apply to the search for fungi. Now, I know not to look. Now I know that if it’s the right time, I’ll catch a glimpse of their glorious colours out the corner of my eye and the whole morning will turn like the seasons.
