Behind The Lens

Location

The photo of the flowers was shot in my home and the skeleton image was shot in a store window. I wander around the streets of Los Angeles looking for window displays that tell a story that I can use in my composited photographs.

Time

Both of the images were shot during the day.

Lighting

I converted the images to Black & White on the iPhone to create a mysterious atmosphere with shadows and negative space focusing on the flowers and skeleton.

Equipment

This photo was shot with my iPhone Xs Max

Inspiration

I loved the female skeleton image. She was part of a Halloween window display. It wasn't until I saw the wilting flowers that I knew the images worked together. Besides being mysterious they feel otherworldly.

Editing

This is a composite of 2 images. Trained as an architect I am captivated by shadows, that is why I shoot in Black & White. The post-processing was done in photoshop. The fading flowers and the skeleton image evoked the beauty of aging and the passing of time.

In my camera bag

I only have my iPhone Xs Max. I don't want to be encumbered with lots of equipment.

Feedback

If you are interested in creating composited images it's important to visualize in advance how the photographs relate to each other. Do they tell a story or evoke a feeling. I do a lot of experimenting with the images to achieve the visual effect I envisioned.
