Behind The Lens
Location
This image of the juvenile gorilla was taken at Taronga Zoo in Sydney Australia. I am a self taught photographer who has a passion of all animals great and small.Time
The photo was captured whilst the young primate was in her indoor area at 12pm. She was enjoying some fresh branches and grasses at the time this was taken.Lighting
I wanted this image to capture the intelligence and soulful look in her eyes. There was natural light falling into her enclosure which gave a nice natural catchlight in her eyes.Equipment
I used a Nikon D850 with a Sigma 60-600mm lens handheld as I wanted to be able to get a nice portrait shot of her without her feeling too intimidated with me being too close to her.Inspiration
The Western lowland Gorilla species is an endangered animal and I wanted to share the beauty of these gorillas and bring awareness to the conservation of these animals.Editing
The image was processed from a raw file through Lightroom. Nothing too complex was done. A few tweaks of shadows and noise reduction were applied as the area although had natural light was still quite dark. Shooting through Perspex also proved a challenge with reflection of objects on the outside becoming an issue. In my camera bag
I usually carry a few different lens that cover a wide variety of lengths. I always have my tripod and extra batteries.Feedback
The only advice I can offer when photographing animals - wildlife is patience. Watch and observe them, learn their mannerisms and behaviours. Be ready with your camera settings so you can get those great shots.
