Behind The Lens

Location

The image was taken in my home garden, this was one of many Dahl flower in bloom. However this particular one was the most pleasing and had some separation from those around it.

Time

The image was taken late afternoon, just after 4pm with the sun hidden behind a house, giving a muted bright backlit light to the flower.

Lighting

With our backyard getting full sun most of the day I had to wait until late afternoon so the full sun was off the flowers. This gave a nice even light to the full flower so that the petals were perfectly exposed giving a beautiful soft effect. There is only a hint of the sun on the top petals without overpowering the full flower. As well there was enough light to keep the background out of focus giving a better background that frames the flower head.

Equipment

Used my Nikon D7200 and 18-105mm lens plus a manfrotto tripod with ballhead with cable release. I always shoot in raw and aperture priority. This image was taken at 1/50sec, F10 and ISO 400.

Inspiration

I have had this type of composition in my head for a while, it wasn't until the right flower, lighting and calm day that allowed me to take the image. The flower was the right shade of yellow and each of the petals had a nice curve to them that caught my eye and made me grab my camera.

Editing

Used minimal post processing on this image, some sharpening plus some general adjustments, kept them all to the minimum. Cropped to 1:1 as a square seemed to be a better choice to keep the focus on the flower and its petals. Normally process majority of my images as 4x6 but this didn't suit this particular one.

In my camera bag

For me my D7200 is my go to camera which I mainly have my Nikon 18-105 lens attached. I find this combination very versatile for my style of photography which is anything to do with nature and landscape. I also have a longer mid range zoom that goes out to 300mm and 105mm macro lens. What I taking pictures of dictates of course which lens is used and carried with me. I don't always carry every lens, only those that I may need. Also a tripod with a ball head plus the camera cable release is important to have. I shoot in raw so I have a good software processing tool to adjust images plus organise my many images.

Feedback

Here is a good example where great images can be found in your own backyard, you don't always have to go far to find that next great image. We have some small gardens in our yard and I always choose flowers each spring with the thought of which ones might make a suitable candidate for taking pictures. Always the hard part is waiting for the right light plus finding unblemished petals, not always easy. Tripod is recommended and also a calm day is needed.
