Location
This photo was taken in my in-laws' front yard. I was working on focusing with a new lens, and she was a willing (and beautiful) subject.Time
This photo was taken right around 7pm in the summertime.Lighting
I was trying to hit golden hour, but due to the yard being completely surrounded by tall trees, none of that beautiful golden light was filtering down. It was still flattering though, since there were no harsh shadows to deal with.Equipment
I probably should have used a tripod as we began to lose the light, but this particular photo was taken at the very beginning of the shoot, so I was able to manage without one. It was taken with a Nikon D5600 and a Yongnuo 50mm lens.Inspiration
I was looking to break into portrait photography. Most of my experience has been in travel photography, but due to Covid-19 I haven't been traveling much this year but was still itching to use my camera. My sister-in-law agreed to model for me so I could get some sample shots to showcase in my portfolio.Editing
This was actually a great lesson for me in post-processing portraits, which I didn't have much experience with. I got to learn how to use all the face retouch tools -- iris enhance, skin smooth, etc. The original photo also had a green cast to it due to being taken in a forested area, so I corrected the white balance and tried out a few presets (also a first for me) to find one that was flattering to her very fair skin and made her beautiful blue eyes stand out against her red hair.In my camera bag
I do a lot of travel photography, so I try to travel light whenever possible. I have a gorilla tripod for low-light or smooth water photography. I have a manual focus 300mm lens for wildlife photography which I would love to replace with an autofocus in the near future. Other than my camera and my standard 50mm lens, the only other thing I typically keep in my camera bag is a pack of lens wipes and an extra SD card.Feedback
I think portrait photography really depends on your model. You can capture a beautiful portrait of just about anyone, but their personality is what really adds the unique aspect to each photo. My sister-in-law has a very sweet, gentle spirit, which really shines through in this picture.
