Location
This photo was taken near Glencoe village, after an after work photo trip to the Highlands! I had heard this group of stags had been spotted there, and couldn’t have been happier when I spotted them for myself and had the chance to photograph themTime
This was taken just after the sun had set! There wasn’t much in the way of colours apart from in this one spot of the skyLighting
As there wasn’t much colour in the sky, I used a combination of a 600mm lens to focus on this one part of the scene, and brought the colours out in camera by changing the white balance to warm the image and enhance the colours that were thereEquipment
This was shot on my canon 5d mk iii, and using my sigma 150-600mm and manfrotto TripodInspiration
I was imminently expecting the birth of my first child, so this was my last photo trip for a while! The whole premise of the trip was to capture a memorable image that would commemorate this pivotal point of my lifeEditing
Apart from the in camera enhancements that mentioned before, I used Lightroom and it’s graduated filter to brighten the foreground a little to make the stags stand out more in the scene! I also had to do some noise reduction as this was shot using quite a high iso. Other than that I increased saturation in the oranges a little to balance the pinks that the camera caughtIn my camera bag
I always carry my canon 5d mk iii, and canon 80d. As well as a canon 17-55mm f2.8 efs, canon 24-85 ef f4, canon 50mm f1.8, samyang 85mm f1.8 af, canon 70-200mm f4, sigma 150-600mm f5.6, my DJI mavic pro 2 and a selection of graduated filtersFeedback
A bit of research into the location and scene you want to photograph, a bit of luck with weather conditions and don’t be afraid to use the in camera functions to create the image you and feeling you have set out to photograph
