This colourful medium sized eagle is one of my favourite raptors. With it's red face, yellow beak and a crown of thick black feathers.
The name bateleur comes from the bird's distinctive aerial acrobatics. When gliding, they tilt their wing angle from one side to the other. This tilting motion is where their French-derived name comes from as it is like street performing tightrope walkers' motion tilting their arms from side to side to keep their balance.
