Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken the spring of 2019 at the Lotus Lounge in West Haven, CT.

Time

This group fashion show started around 6 pm and lasted until around 10 pm. On this occasion the entire event was held inside.

Lighting

The event had multiple backdrops set up with ring lights for general lighting. I used my Quantum Trio on-camera flash to capture everything that night.

Equipment

Everything was shot hand held with my Nikon D610. I used several lens that night including a Nikkor 24-120mm f4, which is my go-to lens, a Nikkor 70-300mm f4.5 and a Nikkor 85mm f 1.8 lens

Inspiration

I have always enjoys shooting models and this was a great way to get the opportunity to photograph multiple models withing a four hour event. (Without having to pay out a fortune.) Some were obviously new to posing and some were very seasoned. I would pick a subject and shoot a series of images and then move on to another person. I shot quite a few frames of Jae since she was one of the more experienced models that night.

Editing

I process all my shots in Lightroom first for general exposure, dynamic contrast and sharpening. This image was then brought into PhotoShop where I did skin retouching and converted the image to black & white.

In my camera bag

I now use a Nikon D750 and carry the D610 as a backup. My general go-to lens is my Nikkor 24-120 f4 but I also have a Nikkor 70-300mm f4.5, a Nikkor 85mm f1.8 and a Nikkor 50mm f1.8 as well. I use a variety of lighting for portrait photography and always carry two Flashpoint Zoom Li-on XR2 rechargeable flash units that can also fire remote strobes.

Feedback

My only advise in trying to shoot an image like this at an event with multiple photographers and models is to try to focus on a model that does not already have too many photographer shooting at the same time. It is much easier to position yourself without having to navigate around other people. Also make sure that you have a robust on-camera flash system (that can last a 4 hour gig) with multiple battery packs.
