Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a protest in Denton Texas following the death of George Floyd. I was walking around with my canon in hand taking shots of the people displaying emotion when I saw this man perfectly framed, so I took the shot.

Time

This was taken around 6 PM after about 2 hours of protesting so the crowd was starting to dwindle, and I managed to stand up on a staircase so I had the ability to shoot a large amount of area.

Lighting

This was perfectly light as suddenly it was overcast so the light was nowhere near as harsh. This made the perfect lighting conditions for this shot.

Equipment

This was taken with a canon 5d iii and a sigma 70-200 2.8. I handheld my camera and took the shot.

Inspiration

What inspired me to take this shot was human emotion. There was such outrage by people after the death of George Floyd and about police brutality in general, and I was included. So when my friend Jaclyn asked me if I wanted to go with her to a protest I did not even hesitate to say yes. I brought along my camera because I knew that I would want to capture these moments, and while everyone was gathered listening to speeches I saw this man holding a sign and took the shot, and it is one of my favorite photos ever.

Editing

I edited this photo in black in white for a number of reasons. I think the contrasting colors show the division of the time that this was taken. Also, it conveys the story better than just some vivid color photo. Lightroom mobile was used to edit this photo because I edited it almost as soon as I took it so I could post it immediately. It was a very simple yet powerful edit.

In my camera bag

I always keep my Canon 7D, and a 24mm prime and a 50mm prime. For sports I take a 5Diii and a 70-200. I use these because primes are cheaper and more limiting so ut

Feedback

To capture something similar you need to have the mindset of a photographer. Take your camera EVERYWHERE, no matter what. You never know when you will get a chance. And always focus on story instead of anything technical. Look for emotion, like this shot. If you do these things you can get great photographs.
