Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on a farm in South Africa. I was surprised to see how it came out, especially with the soft, pastel-like colours. I would say this is definitely one of my favourite pictures that I've taken.

Time

This was taking shortly after sunset, although I can't remember the exact date or time.

Lighting

I love taking pictures during sunset. I always find that the lighting is easier to manipulate as it is a lot "softer" than midday sun, for example. For the picture, I stayed to watch the sun set and just snapped this on a whim. I was surprised to see how it came out, especially with the soft, pastel-like colours, as it was already quite dark outside.

Equipment

I used a Canon EOS 1100D with a EFS 18-55mm lens.

Inspiration

I love outdoor rphotography because there are so many things you can take a picture of in a small area or space. I was inspired to take this photo after finding this clump of fluffy grass growing among a few weeds. I loved the sunset in the background and wondered if the fluffy tips would stand out at all.

Editing

As an amateur photographer I don't really do much processing or understand many of the things that go on in photo editing software. For this image I basically just edited the RAW image in DPP4 software to change the lighting and colour tones a bit.

In my camera bag

I'm usually running around with just my camera and my tripod. I like to keep it simple.

Feedback

Be sure to take a bunch of pictures and keep changing your angles. This picture was one of the last ones I took and it turned out to be my favourite, even though it wasn't what I initially had in mind. Also, if you are shooting at dusk/dawn, be sure to start taking pictures early enough so that you can still adjust your settings in time to catch the perfect moment.
