Behind The Lens

Location

This magnificent white tailed deer was taken in the aspens located in Jasper Colorado in the heart of the Rio Grand National Forest.

Time

The photo was taken in the very early morning light allowing the light to sculpt the subject and filter softly through the forest.

Lighting

The lighting also reduced the contrast allowing me to blend into the background which helped hold the deers attention while it consider whether I was friend or not. Holding perfectly still, it obliged, holding its pose for nearly a minute.

Equipment

I used my iPhone 11, which replaced my previous X, which had fallen into Lake McDonald at Glacier National Park while kayaking the just opened area.

Inspiration

Visiting remote areas due to Covid, was my inspiration to get back to nature and capture the pristine and unaffected flora FB fauna. Being quiet and careful in wilderness approaches tends to allow the photographer to become a participant in the landscape, and be accepted by the natural routines of nature. Together the moment shared, it wanted to be seen in the Summer easy living, in contrast to the isolation of winter hard living in very deep snow.

Editing

To bring out the brilliance of the color and contrast that was lost during the limitations of most cameras, I corrected for that, and to capture that spectacular emotion with subtle focusing on an already serendipitous capture.

In my camera bag

I use a verity if cameras, but this is my main choice while traveling because I can snap an image while on the move, sometime out of the window, other times wherever the opportunity allows. Small profiles often allow otherwise wasted movements and sounds.

Feedback

The best advice I have is that beginners can take expert photos, but understanding the subject, it’s backgrounds, messages and counter meanings, the times in life and context, increases your chances. Even experts can take poor photographs, but they increase the odds by becoming familiar in the functions of the equipment, subjects and lighting. The other thing to recognize is there is usually something artistic to capture with composition, others miss. Just be ready when the moments happen and your odds increase too. Happy shooting. No hunter permit needed.
