This photo was taken on-site at a new up and coming bakery in my area! I am a self taught photographer who specializes in Weddings and wanted to venture out and try food photography! We placed these cupcakes on a nice deep blue table next to a window.Time
This photo was actually taken at night in the summer. I had started taking other food photos at around 5pm however continued throughout the night and just changed the light source from natural window light to one umbrella light. I actually much prefer the umbrella lighting to natural lighting for these cupcake photos. This photo was taken on Friday June 19, 2020 at 10:40 PM.Lighting
The umbrella light I set up really gave it that nice white yet soft lighting I was looking for. As a natural light photographer I much prefer using umbrella lights for food photography and have noticed that it is much better with being able to control the brightness and where it lands. To make sure that the photo would turn out we made sure to turn off the other lights around it, so as not to throw off the colour / add shadows where I didn't want them.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon 7D Mark ii with a Canon 50mm 1.4 lens and one umbrella light placed slightly to the left of me.Inspiration
My goal was to work with this new up-coming bakery to create some beautiful shots that they could advertise with and display their work online for customers to order. This was my second time working with this bakery to capture their cupcakes and with capturing cupcake photos in general! As I don't have much background experience with food photography I just decided to play with the elements of the cupcake to create a very intriguing and delicious looking photo. Since the cupcake was salted caramel topped with pretzels, I decided to use those elements to decorate around the cupcake to draw in the viewer. Next, I used the rule of photographing food in odd numbers, and decided to put one cupcake in front of the rest but place the other two slightly behind and at different angles to draw in the viewer and add a feeling of depth to the image.Editing
This photo really did not take much in post processing! My settings for this shot were ISO 400, F1.8 and 1/125. So in post processing, I just added very little extra light, added some contrast, very little sharpness and that was it! I really try to get my photos as good as I can in camera so that post-processing does not take very long so I can spend more time enjoying taking the photos than fixing them later. In my camera bag
I always have most of my gear in my bag at all times! First I start with my Canon 7D Mark ii and make sure to pack extra batteries (fully charged), because you never know when you'll need them! Next, I always make sure I have my Canon 24mm 2.8 macro lens. This lens is amazing for capturing detail and is always great in tight spaces. I absolutely love my primes, so next of course I make sure to pack my Canon 50 mm 1.4 lens. This lens is incredible, it is always so sharp, performs amazing in low lighting and is a real game changer! I also make sure to pack extra SD cards, my Canon 75-300 (just in case!) and a small battery powered square LED light.Feedback
For others looking to capturing food or desserts, I highly recommend using umbrella or studio lighting. The lighting can be much more controlled by you this way to create the look you want. Also, photographing food in odd numbers helps to create a more visually appealing photo. When photographing food, you definitely want to make sure that you add decorations or elements that relate to the food to draw in the viewer. Also, making sure that you do not use overly shiny items to photograph with or photograph on.
