Behind The Lens

Location

This Was Shot @TheGraffitiwall In Downtown St. Louis Missouri. It Was Part of a Shoot Called Can We Come out & Play. Happened at The end of June. Bunch of Models & Photographers Were Tired of Being Quarantined and Decided To Shoot.

Time

Anytime there is a Group Shoot Everybody Thinks it Should Start @ Noon- One Oclock. I Shot This in the Shadows. Shadows In The City Usually Produces a Really Pretty Light. https://photos.app.goo.gl/cxSUfx2c5Ti6Pibq8

Lighting

It's Natural Light. Didn't Need Any Help From Me.

Equipment

I Shot This With a Nikon D800 and a Lensbaby On Extention Tubes. I Always Carry Extention Tubes they Come in Really Handy. This is The Lensbaby Wide Angle. I Use it Because It Creates Better Images.

Inspiration

I Liked The Girl. She Had a Blaze Orange Swim Top. I Was Hoping it was a Swim Suit, But that Didn't Work. She Was a Young Black Girl About 20. Really Shy. Couldn't Figure Out Who This Old White Guy Was. Loaded With All This Equipment. I Don't Carry PRESS CREDENTIALS Anymore. What I Do Carry Is My Instagram. So I Can Introduce my Self and Show a Portfolio On the Spot. I Don't Have Time to Train Models On the Street. Usually Takes a Year to Train a Model. I DO HAVE TIME TO MAKE PEOPLE FEEL COMFORTABLE. That's What I Did. I Also Asked if She had Lip Gloss. Like Any Young Woman, She Did! That Made The Shot.

Editing

This Was Pretty Simple. It's an ISO 100 Black&White Conversion. No Presets. I Love Shooting Black People. I Make Their Skin DARK. I also Wanted The Highlights to Be White.Aa Slight Dodge Did The Trick. I Use Sharpening, Detail & Clarity To Get it as Sharp as I Want.

In my camera bag

I Generally Carry a Large Camera Bag & a Photo Vest. Things Like Film & Filters Go In the Vest. I Carry One Circular Modifier For the Strobes. I Carry One old Strobe That Will Give Me F22 For Flash Fill. In Daylight F22,250th of a Second Usually Works. I Don't Use Highspeed Sync Because I Can't Get Enough Power. I Carry 3 Nikons. One Digital and 2 Analogue Film Bodies. The Film Cameras are For Creating Presets in the Future. I Carry a 24-85 F2.8 Nikor, A Lensbaby Kit. a 70-300mm Nikor, & Extention Tubes. I Carry 3 Speedlights. Strobe Poppers and an Extention PC.

Feedback

Watch First Shoot Later. Practice The Art of Seeing. I Watch Everything. Golfer Tiger Woods Said Something Very interesting, Once. " I Go Out On The Course, and If my Eyes LIKE THE COURSE. I WIN! I Have Taught Classes On the Art of Seeing. You Have to Know What You're Looking At. I Have Studied Millions of Pictures Over The Years. I've Been Going to Book Stores and Looking at Books & Magazines For Years. It's How You Learn to Light Expose and Recognize Design. F8! & Be There Is No Longer the Norm. Photography in the Digital Age is More Complex Than it Was In 1972 When I Started Shooting Professionally.
