I set this subject up in my lounge room at homeTime
I do most of my creative photography early in the morning before the world starts. I often get an idea during the night and set it up when I first wake up. This photo was taken at 4:32am in the middle of winter.Lighting
I don't have a lot of lighting equipment so normally have to rely on introduced light (at this time of day) from other sources. The lighting I used for this one was a hand-held LED torch I pick up at the local Super Cheap Auto parts store. I played around with different angles until I got the right "fall" of light.Equipment
I used a Nikon D750 with an old manual focus Tamron 18-200mm lens I used with an older camera. I added some Kenko extension tubes to get the macro effect. Also used a tripod as I find this type of photography, using the equipment I have, is almost impossible to do without a tripod. I placed a rubber band around the pencils to keep them together and sat the pencils on a dark floor tile I use for some of my photography.Inspiration
I am fascinated by macrophotography and the textures that can be reproduced in an image. I often look at something and wonder how it would work with a macro photograph. Using different light sources is something I challenge myself with often. Combining colour, light and macro was my inspiration.Editing
I always shoot in RAW and develop my photos in Lightroom. There was very little I had to do to this image in Post Processing other than adjust the Light and exposure elements. I also added some texture and clarity to ensure that parts of the image were sharp enough. In my camera bag
My bag is very simple - Normally, I carry two lenses - both prime - 20mm and 50mm and my Kenko extension tubes should I want macro to inspire me. If I'm going out for photography, I normally take my tripod and always have my pixie tripod in my bag.Feedback
This sort of photography is only limited by imagination. Playing with light and the lenses available can produce some great images. Patience is the key. I often find that my images don't work the way I want them to but every now and again, I get a cracker. It's all about persistence and patience when you come up with an idea. And - just keep experimenting!
