Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my wife's sunflower garden during the COVID spring. It really was a breath of fresh air that day!

Time

This was a wonderful morning shot. In New Mexico, even in the city, the honey bees are active with our sunflowers early. Needing a break from the dreary routine, I spent some time watching the bees to figure out what shot I wanted best to capture. The 8AM sun was just about right and click, I got this wonderful shot.

Lighting

I really wanted to make sure I did not let the sun get too high otherwise I would really loose the golden hues that make the bee and flower mesh so well and really set the picture off. When photographers that rely on natural light talk about the golden hours, we really can mean golden.

Equipment

This was shot on my Nikon d7100 with a Tamron 18-270mm

Inspiration

I have always loved nature photography and with the COVID issues of 2020, getting out of the house into the sun and indulging into hobbies and passions have never been more important. My wife always cultivates sunflowers in our front yard gardens and I enjoy just being out amongst them. When the bees are active it is even better. I spent a couple of morning hours, several days in a row watching and taking shots until I got the one that I really loved and wanted to share with people.

Editing

There were only a couple of things I needed to do with this shot. Since I was shooting handheld, the seeded area of the sunflower was a touch out of focus, so I used a simple unsharpen mask in photoshop to bring the edges of the seeds back for the better clarity. Then I ran a minor levels adjustment.

In my camera bag

Of course I always have my d7100 (primarily because I can't really afford to upgrade it....here's hoping it does not die). For lenses, I always keep my Tamron 18-270mm 'walk-around' lens. It is a great versatile lens that can do everything pretty well. Other lenses that make the cut really just depend on what my plans are.

Feedback

Sometimes it is a plan your day thing, sometimes it is a continuous go back, be patient and wait for your shot adventure; really where you take lots of shots where some are amazing, some are good and some are crap. #photographerlife Just keep all the usual stuff in mind: composition, light, settings and most importantly enjoyment.
