Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at a small seaside town called Clifton Springs which is south west of Melbourne in Australia. Across the bay are the You Yang mountain ranges.

Time

This was taken close to sunset. I wanted to wait until the sun was further down but some very threatening rain clouds were gathering and rolling in over me. So I took the pic and headed back to the safety of the car......just in time!

Lighting

Actually, this isn't the image I went there to take. My idea was to try to recreate the sort of lighting used by the Dutch masters. I managed this on a different photo but left my camera set up to take this one as well. Basically, there was plenty of light to be had....too much in fact. So I set my camera to underexpose by a stop.

Equipment

My standard equipment is a Nikon 850. I used a tripod in this case to help me better frame the picture. I never use flash. I could have used a neutral density filter on this photo but didn't since it was taken in a rush to beat the rain.

Inspiration

Originally, I set out to take some photos emulating the lighting of the old Dutch masters. Whilst this isn't one of that set I was attracted to the old pier poles in silhouette with the You Yang mountains in the background. The birds on top of the poles had settled to join the silhouette. The You Yang mountains have enormous cultural significance in Australia and with the rain clouds rolling in the whole scene took on a sense of quiet drama.

Editing

The original image was taken in RAW format and then edited using LightRoom. I try to keep post processing to a minimum. However this pic required a little more attention. Or should I say 'deserved' a little more attention. Firstly, I reduced the exposure even more and darkened the rain clouds overhead. Then I desaturated the color palette and added vignette to darken the corners.....especially the right hand bottom which was too bright and I wanted to close off the image.

In my camera bag

I try to keep it light and keep it basic. Nikon 850, Nikkor 28-300 f3.5 zoom lens and/or Nikkor 105mm primary lens, Neutral density filters, Remote (IR) shutter control, mobile phone and recharger, Epipen (allergic to ant bites), pen and notebook. Where needed I also carry a Manfrotto travel tripod

Feedback

When taking landscapes I tend to 'think portrait'. After all, what's a landscape if it's not a portrait of nature?
