To Regain My Feet And My Pounding Heart
"As long as the moon shall rise
As long as the rivers flow
As long as the sun shall shine
And the grass will grow
Let me listen, I will learn
to speak the old language, Yes I yearn
to bathe in blue skies and fall apart
From the world of machines
regain my feet and my pounding heart" ~ Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers; "Buffalo"
Its a real thrill to finally stumble across this bison herd at the Grand Canyon National Park, North Rim. On a morning drive in the back country, I rolled up on them in a large rolling meadow, maybe 70 head, not sure. I parked a long way off but this herd was very skittish and ran off behind the hill before I even got out of the Jeep. Judging the distance and direction as they crested and disappeared behind a hill, I used the terrain to my advantage and set out on foot 400 yards to intercept them in the next meadow as they entered it coming out of woods...but alas, skittishness continued and as soon a one bull saw me, a grunt.
The herd took off in a wild stampede across the meadow, kicking up a dust cloud reminiscent and palpable of a time when I witnessed the great wildebeest and zebra migration in the Serengeti. ...the sound of wind replaced with rhythmic galloping hoof-thumps. The feeling of solid ground vibrating through vibram soles. The vision obscured for moments as dark horned behemoths come and go in the dust.
And then for a moment I became present to the era of the old west and how vast herds in the millions used to roam the plains, like I was just getting a very small taste of that grandness and experience, and both of those thoughts brought me great delight. While those moments are time and worlds apart, I am swept away again to regain my feet and my pounding heart.
