I took this photo at a garden in Ames, Iowa.Time
This photo was taken in the mid afternoon on a warm, and humid summer day. I photograph monarch butterflies frequently as they migrate across Iowa, especially in September, but this afternoon several monarchs were in the garden during mid summer. Of course, wasps consider mid summer their prime time for activity in the garden, so the two met over the same flower.Lighting
It was a sunny day, which enhanced the flowers and cast only small shadows.Equipment
My Nikon D3400 with a 70-300mm telephoto lens. Lightweight to carry around and produces consistently good pictures.Inspiration
I am always inspired by the beauty of nature, and particularly butterflies. I love the appearance and flight of monarchs especially, and they have a wonderful migration story.Editing
Not much. I am really about taking the picture. I don’t do much post-processing. I may have cropped it slightly or enhanced the colors a bit.In my camera bag
My Nikon D3400 and a standard and telephoto lens is usually all I take.Feedback
Be patient. Shoot lots of pictures when the subject arrives and then wait some more for another chance. Never give up.
