The Egyptian god Osiris seated on his throne, holding the ‘Key of Life’, or an Ankh. Osiris was the god of earthly phenomena such as fertility and agriculture but also a deity of the afterlife, the dead, resurrection and life.
He is wearing the Atef crown, a feathered crown which was specifically worn by him. The crown combines the Hedjet, the crown of Upper Egypt, with curly ostrich feathers on each side.
The feathers are the same as the single one worn by Ma’at, the goddess who embodies the ideals of Truth and Balance. The crown is modified with ram horns and a sun disk. Ram horns represented fertility and war in ancient Egyptian religion and in some religious art were associated with the Ba of Osiris, or his Soul.
The chisel marks on the wall relief attest to the zeal of the early Christians as the policy of iconoclasm has damaged the religious art of the ancient Egyptians in the temple.
This was photographed at the Temple of Horus at Edfu, a major Ptolemaic temple, built between 237 BCE and 57 BCE, which is located in Southern Egypt by the Nile.
