A range of tomato fields is separated from my farm by a tumbly strip of woods. Between the tomato field and the woods is a very sweet pond, with a rock shelf the gods seemed to design specifically as a sturdy armchair for viewing the beauty in front of you. You might say I was armchair traveling.Time
Undoubtedly before 4:00—the witching hour, when every mosquito within ten miles sends up the fanfare: “Zika’s out strolling. LUNCH!”Lighting
The late afternoon offered a sort of golden glow, laced with thin rays which peered through the tree branches. One seemed to aim itself at this blossom like a quarterback racing for the goalpost.Equipment
As always, my ever-present iPhone.Inspiration
Beauty has a way of commanding our attention. It’s bigger than I am; I couldn’t fight it off.Editing
I was just beginning to experiment with Pixelmator, which I’ve grown very fond of. I wasn’t thrilled with the water in the b.g. of the image; plus I wanted the blossom to be the focus. So I decided to paint out the details and create a suggestion of water, trees, light, earth, etc.In my camera bag
Given my “camera,” I’m able to travel light. No bag, just a pocket in my jeans, my favorite hiking stick, and some sort of water container.Feedback
I think photographers have a natural instinct—like painters —for making the vessel suit the theme. If you want a somber or thoughtful image, you’re not going to shoot in bright, noonday sun. If you want carefree and happy, you wouldn’t overload your image with details. Use your instincts and don’t overthink it.
