We were visiting a lavender farm in Hampshire, UK when this young lady crouched down to smell the lavender and reach out to her friend. The husband gave me permission to take this photo.
I was very happy with the light and composition here. A moment in time captured. I subsequently used this image as subject matter for one of my detailed pastel paintings.....

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a lavender farm in Hampshire, when we were staying with friends who lived in the county. This child was crouched down stroking her dog's leg and, with her father's permission, I took a number of photographs of her. This one was the best, with her face looking downward and her hat revealing strands of hair. Her leg, her single shoe and arrangement of her dress completed the image.

Time

This was taken in the early afternoon on a warm day in July. The shadows are provided by the parents and the dog.

Lighting

As mentioned above, there was no planning with this photo. Just good light with contrasting shadows.

Equipment

This was taken using a Nikon D3000 and a Tamron 18-270mm lens.

Inspiration

I had been looking for subject matter for my detailed and realistic pastel artwork and this child caught my eye. With her pretty dress and the lavender backdrop she seemed the perfect subject to paint. Subsequently I did paint her portrait, replacing the leg of the dog with a handful of lavender ( artistic licence!) and the completed painting quickly sold.

Editing

No

In my camera bag

I am not a professional photographer so I don't have much. I just use the Nikon D3000 with it's flexible 18-270mm lens and compliment this with a Samsung S9+ mobile phone. I do have microfibre cloths as well!

Feedback

I think that it is "right time, right place" sometimes and looking at every scene as though it is a painting. Also worth considering the contrasting colours, light and textures on every composition.
